NBS Primary School Football Tournament – 2010

Fourteen teams competed at the NBS Primary Schools football tournament held at Paroa School.

Karoro Red retained the Dewar Cup beating Paroa B in an exciting final which went to golden goal extra time and each team dropping a player every minute. Luke Sturkenboom nailed the winning goal from a sharp break out after play had see sawed up and down the field. Goalies Sefton Mason and Bailey Stewart kept their teams in the game with strong saves from talented strikers with Michael Cook, Phoebe Roberts and Levi Maskill for Karoro’s while Damon Gill, Fin Gilbertson and Katrina Ilton were dangerous for Paroa.

 

In the play off for 3rd and 4th St Mary’s Hokitika, with Vincent Lucas leading the attack out lasted a gallant Lake Brunner who had shown giant killing form throughout the day with Josh Morgan capturing there most valuable player award.

 

Run by West Coast Football in conjunction with Sport West Coast this is now in it’s fourth year.

 

Event coordinator Jack O’Connor praised all the teams for the wonderful spirit the games were played and noted that well over half the players were playing football for the first time. He made special mention of St Patricks who had 33 of their 40, year 7/8 children participating which is fantastic response. "It was awesome 150 kids. Two times 10 minute long games going at once with 1 minute between the games. It was full on," O'Connor noted. "I can see why shortened version of sport, 7’s rugby, 20/20 cricket etc., are taking off – just all action.This format really appeals to the kids which is what it’s all about 7 with World Cup pending Football number could go through the roof here."
